Indian breakfasts, known for their rich flavours and cultural depth, have once again earned international recognition. In its latest global ranking released in June 2025, Taste Atlas has included three beloved Indian morning staples in its list of the 50 Best Breakfasts in the World. Leading the Indian contingent is Maharashtra’s iconic Misal Pav, which secured the 18th spot. Paratha, a popular dish across northern India and beyond, claimed the 23rd position, while Delhi’s street food favourite Chole Bhature came in at number 32.

Taste Atlas, a widely followed food and travel platform, described Misal Pav as a culinary spectacle. “It is mandatory for a true misal to be spicy, while the base needs to be crunchy. Visually, it should look like a work of art, with lots of colours — typically red, brown, orange, and green,” the platform noted in its description of the dish.

Prepared with sprouted moth beans simmered in a fiery, tangy gravy, Misal is traditionally topped with crispy farsan, chopped onions, and a dash of lemon, then served with soft pav. Though it originated in Maharashtra, the dish enjoys wide appeal and comes in multiple regional versions.

Beyond its flavour profile, Misal Pav is also cherished for its ability to transform humble pantry staples into a satisfying and nutritious breakfast — a testament to India’s tradition of making the most out of local ingredients.

North Indian classics also share the spotlight

Joining Misal Pav in the top ranks are two North Indian heavyweights. The versatile Paratha, found in countless Indian homes and highway dhabas, continues to be a breakfast essential for millions. Whether stuffed with potatoes, paneer, radish, or simply served plain with a dollop of butter, parathas have long been a symbol of hearty northern hospitality.

Also featured is Chole Bhature, one of Delhi’s most loved morning meals. This combination of spicy chickpeas (chole) and deep-fried bread (bhature) is more than a street food staple — it’s a weekend ritual for many. Crisp, fluffy bhature paired with rich, masala-laden chole offer a deeply satisfying start to the day.

While the Instagram announcement by Taste Atlas highlighted only the top 50, its official website extends the list to include rankings up to 100 — with more Indian dishes making their presence felt. Among these are Nihari, a slow-cooked meat stew often eaten for breakfast in parts of North India; Shrikhand, a creamy dessert made from strained yogurt; and Palak Paneer, a spinach and cottage cheese preparation that also finds its way onto breakfast tables, especially in Punjabi households
