Gandhi Jayanti, celebrated on the 2nd of October every year, marks the birthday of the Father of the Nation which makes it a momentous and patriotic occasion for all Indians. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or as he’s famously known as: Mahatma Gandhi was born on Oct 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.
The youngest of 4 children born to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai, Mahatma Gandhi, affectionately referred to as ‘Bapu’ (Father) was a key figure in India’s fight for Independence. His early life was spent studying law and after achieving his goal of becoming a barrister, he set up shop in apartheid South Africa where he spent 21 years advocating for the Indians living there and fighting for their civil rights. He did so by employing non-violent tactics or Satyagraha for the first time.
Return of the prodigal son
He returned to India in 1915 and soon set about organizing peasants, farmers, and indentured laborers to protest against the discriminatory practices and unfairly levied taxes. He eventually went on to lead the Congress and pioneered the strategy of non-violence which was instrumental in India’s struggle for freedom against the British.
He spearhead multiple mass movements such as the Non-Cooperation movement which also involved the swadeshi policy of boycotting foreign goods and being self-sufficient and the Civil Disobedience movement which involved the famous Salt March to Dandi which was a protest against the salt tax imposed by the British.
He also supported many other movements led by other leaders of the Indian freedom struggle and always advocated for religious unity, communal harmony, upliftment of women and depressed classes and non-violence.
His efforts were one of the major contributing factors which finally led India to it’s freedom on Aug 15 1947 and his contributions to the country can never be forgotten. His birthday is thus celebrated every year as a national holiday, and is observed in all the states and union territories.
