Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, who helped Kareena Kapoor reach size zero during Tashan, is an advocate of healthy and mindful eating. She often shares her wisdom on social media, educating people about food and healthy lifestyle. She recently appeared on Tweak India‘s YouTube channel with actor Ahsaas Channa where she shared her two cents on the ‘healthy’ foods available in the market. She suggested a simple test that anyone can conduct to find out if the food they are consuming is doing anything for your body.

Rujuta Diwekar’s local language test

Rujuta shared that the easiest way to find out if a healthy food item is actually healthy is through the language test.

“If the food being recommended to you has a name only in English and not in your local or regional language, it’s a red flag. We’re living in a climate crisis, and food must be ecologically sensitive. Eating within our ecological means means consuming foods that are local, seasonal, and traditional,” she explained.

When we choose locally grown foods, we are not only supporting regional farmers, but also reducing our carbon footprint and staying true to our environment.

“Our gut microbiota, which consists of trillions of microbes, is influenced by the food we eat and where we live. People in different regions have different gut compositions based on the local diet they’ve followed for generations,” she further added.

Not just that, she also mentioned how the younger generations are moving away from traditional food and regional produce. “We’re losing touch with the vegetables, fruits, and recipes that our grandparents used to consume. This not only impacts our health but also disturbs biodiversity and ecological balance,” she mentioned.

But even while advocating for locally grown food, she did not dismiss global food items completely. In her words, “Use traditional, local foods as your dietary base, and integrate global superfoods like quinoa or avocado occasionally—only if they suit your needs and add genuine value.”
