Sanjay Kapur’s estate battle: Sona Comstar chairman Sanjay Kapur passed away earlier this year in June in Windsor, England. He not only left behind his Rs 30,000 crore estate but a murky inheritance battle for his large family. Kapur reportedly suffered a heart attack during a polo match and is survived by his wife Priya Sachdev, ex-wife Karisma Kapoor, his mother, and four children.
Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani, Sanjay Kapur’s sister, Mandira Kapur Smith, shed light on her family’s view on the third wife, Priya Sachdev. While the inheritance battle remains sub judice, she revealed some shocking facts that preceded the Sachdev-Kapur union.
‘You don’t destroy a marriage’
In a candid exchange, Mandira revealed that she knew about the interaction between Sanjay Kapur and Priya Sachdev, while he was still married to Karisma, referring to her as Lolo. “I wasn’t happy about it,” she said, since they were in a good place and Karisma and Sanjay Kapur’s son, Kian, had just been born.
“I think for another woman to not care about a woman who’s just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt a family is in bad taste. And I will leave it there,” she said. Accusing Priya Sachdev of breaking up a happy marriage, she remarked, “You don’t destroy a marriage. And Lolo did not deserve that. Lolo was also working very hard to make this marriage work. She did not deserve what came to her.”
There have been several speculations about the fact that the couple divorced because of domestic and emotional abuse. However, there were no confirmations about the matter.
‘Dad was totally against Priya’
Revealing what their family thought of Priya, Mandira Kapur went on to say that their father was especially against it. Despite the fact that Sanjay convinced her that he had finally found his match, she recalled what her father had said at the time. “He can never marry her. I don’t ever want to see her face. And they can’t have children,” he reportedly told Mandira.
She overtly mentioned how the entire family was against this marriage. “Nobody stood by them getting married. Nobody stood by them. I did it because I love my brother,” Mandira said. It was also revealed that neither she nor her sister attended Sanjay Kapur’s wedding with Priya Sachdev in 2017 in New York. Reiterating her father’s words, she noted that had he been alive at the time, it would have been possible, the marriage would not have broken.
Despite the fact that Kapur’s mother, Rani, lived with him, she opposed Priya’s hurried appointment to the Sona Comstar board. Several reports claimed that she kept Sanjay Kapur from meeting his children with Karisma and even concealed assets, days after his death.
