Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma’s restaurant, Kap’s Cafe, located in Surrey, British Columbia, came under gunfire in the early hours of Thursday, just days after its grand opening. Authorities are investigating the incident, with early reports suggesting a potential Khalistani link. The cafe has now responded to the Khalistani attack.
Cafe’s response
Kap’s Cafe, which marks Kapil Sharma’s debut in the restaurant industry, issued a heartfelt statement on Instagram following the attack.
“We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking,” the statement read.
The cafe added that they were “processing the shock” but vowed to “stand firm against violence.” The message also thanked patrons for their support and emphasised the importance of community.
“Your kind words, prayers, and memories shared via DM mean more than you know. Let’s ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community,” the statement concluded.
What happened at Kap’s Cafe?
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), at least eight bullets were fired at the café located on the 8400 block of 120 Street, near the Surrey-North Delta border. The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m., while staff members were still inside the premises.
A Surrey Police news release confirmed that although the property was damaged, no injuries were reported. An investigation into the motive and suspects is currently underway.
Spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. “Connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined. Once that’s done, we’ll have a better idea of what happened,” he said.
Who claimed responsibility for the attack?
Meanwhile, Harjit Singh Laddi, a Babbar Khalsa International operative and one of India’s most wanted by the NIA, claimed responsibility for the shooting. In a social media post, he and associate Toofan Singh cited alleged remarks by Kapil Sharma on Nihangs as the motive behind the attack.
