Jana Nayagan CBFC Delay: Thalapathy Vijay starrer Jana Nayagan is scheduled for a worldwide release on January 9. The final film of the South superstar has found itself in the middle of a clash with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). With its release date just hours away and the Indian clearance pending, the UK censor board has green-flagged its statewide release with a 15-rated certification.
However, in India, it is yet to receive clearance from the censor board as the makers moved the Madras High Court for the same. As of December 29, 2025, the film had received a ‘UA 16+’ rating, given the depiction of gory content. But on January 5, based on a complaint from an individual who objected to the content, the film had to go through another round of scrutiny from the Revision Committee.
Jana Nayagan’s UK clearance
According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), Jana Nayagan has received a ’15’ certificate. As per the rules of the UK censor board, Thalapathy Vijay’s film is suitable for audiences aged 15 and above. No one younger than 15 will be allowed to see it in a cinema or rent/buy it.
The BBFC issued a clear disclaimer about the use of strong language, frequent violence, sexual imagery, and drug misuse. However, this marks a clear sign of clearance for its release in the UK.
Jana Nayagan’s battle with CBFC
With the next hearing scheduled for today, January 7, in the Madras High Court, the film is yet to be cleared by the Revising Committee, citing Rule 24. It refers to the Cinematograph (Certification) Rule, which allows a provision to raise a complaint regarding the portrayal of religious sentiments and the armed forces.
Countering the plea, the producers shared that there was over Rs 500 crore riding on the film, scheduled for a release across 5000 screens. With a barrier from the CBFC, Jana Nayagan also carries clearance from 24 other countries, including the UK. The producers noted that a further delay in the release would raise piracy concerns. In fact, as per reports, Jana Nayagan was scheduled for a release in October but was postponed due to undisclosed reasons.
