Billionaire pop star Taylor Swift announced her engagement to Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce in August. Sending her fans, popularly called Swifties, into a frenzy online. Probably the most-awaited wedding in pop culture, Swift finally found her match after years of singing about her failed love tropes. However, the Chiefs vs Chargers game did not prove to be pleasant for Kelce.
During the third quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs vs Los Angeles Chargers game in Brazil, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce got slapped in the face by Chargers defensive tackle Teair Tart. This game marked his first appearance since the couple announced their engagement via a social media post. However, the Internet questioned why she decided not to make the trip to Sao Polo.
Travis Kelce slapped on field
The incident took place right after Patrick Mahomes set up a touchdown, finished by running back Kareem Hunt’s two-yard run. In the play, Travis Kelce appeared to push Tart, who reacted by slapping the front of Kelce’s helmet. The moment was caught on camera as Kelce was seen throwing his hands up in shock.
A referee intervened and called a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on Tart, but he wasn’t ejected for violence. The clip quickly went viral on social media, as Swifties rushed to demand action against Tart. As explained by NFL expert Terry McAulay to USA Today, Tart’s actions did not include a closed-fist strike; instead was an open-palmed smack.
Tart’s troll on Taylor
This tiff between Kelce and Tart did not end on the field. Based on Internet speculation, the LA Chargers player took to social media and trolled Taylor Swift after their win. He posted the famous Chapelle’s Show clip where Rick James slaps Charlie Murphy with the caption, “I’m too swift with it even in Brazil.”
This seemingly backhanded comment invited a spur of reactions online, slamming the NFL player. However, fans couldn’t help but notice Swift’s absence to support her fiancé. According to The Daily Mail, Swift calculated the cost of pulling off a secure, quick-turnaround visit and decided it was too much.
