Tamil film Kaantha has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year having been in production for years now. Starring Dulquer Salmaan, Samuthirakani, Bhagyashri Borse and Rana Daggupati in titular roles, the film is a period piece set in the 1950s and revolves around the artistic rivalries and creative struggles of the era. Though it was rumoured to be loosely based on the life of M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, widely regarded by critics as “one of the first Tamil superstars”, was dismissed at a recent press conference held for the movie.

Released on November 14, which coincides with Children’s Day, the movie has been receiving mixed reviews from critics and movie-goers alike, with many praising Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashree Borse’s performance in the movie but criticising the film’s pacing. At the press conference for Kaantha, the actor who also co-produced the movie said, “…The film recreates a time when art, music, and literature defined perfection. Cinema like this celebrates our roots.”

What the early reviews on X are saying

Critics and early audience members took to social media immediately after the film ended and so far, the verdict has been majorly positive-to-mixed with criticisms about the film’s second half but strong praise for the strong performances of the actors. Dulquer Salmaan in particular has been singled out for admiration in what many are calling a ‘career-defining’ performance.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) posted, “…A powerful film that slowly pulls you in and completely owns you by the end. #DulquerSalmaan delivers his career-best performance. Interval mirror scene & final stretch are pure NATIONAL AWARD material.” While another wrote, “Its biggest strength is the performance of its cast #DulquerSalmaan #Samuthirakanni and #BhagyashreeBorse”

The supporting cast is also powerful with movie goers lauding Bhagyashree Borse’s performance in the movie. One user wrote, “National Award winning performance :@BhagyashriBose. what a talent found to South Indian cinema” while another claimed that she dominated the film with her striking presence. “She has easily Dominated Dulquer Salmaan in most of her scenes. Welcome Bhagyashree Borse to Kollywood,” they said.

Many movie goers also hit back at criticisms which declared that the movie was “too slow” declaring that though it wasn’t like the masala-packed, fast paced movies that have become the norm today, Kaantha was more artistic and required a nuanced audience to appreciate the film. “The film may not work for audiences who are used to racy mass commercial thrillers but if you have the patience to admire the art go for Kaantha.” Set design, cinematography and lighting also received widespread commendation.

About the film

Kaantha has received a strong 9.3/10 rating on IMDb which speaks to the film’s brilliance and the streaming rights to it were bought by OTT giant Netflix. Set in the 1950s, the film follows the life of a legendary director and the conflict that arises between him and a film star who he helped to establish and popularize.

The story takes a darker turn when the actor renames a female-focused production to suit his own image. Mysterious, egotistical and ambitious, Kaantha is one of the most creative releases this year. Out in theatres now.
