If you are a millennial or a ‘borderline Gen-Z’ then Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham must have been one of your first films. Karan Johar has been making classic rom-coms since 1998 and it has become a genre in itself. Now, after years of producing and mentoring new talent, Johar is ready to step back behind the camera.

Script locked, film planned for 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, Karan Johar is set to return to the director’s chair with his eighth directorial venture. According to Pinkvilla, the filmmaker has locked the script for a big-scale family drama that is said to be the same as his 2001 cult classic, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The announcement has already sparked excitement within industry circles.

Biggest Film of his career so far

A source close to the development told Pinkvilla that Johar’s decision comes after the success of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. “After hitting the bullseye with a romantic family comedy, Karan is returning to the family drama genre. This will be his biggest film in terms of scale till date, and he has ushered in the New Year by locking the script,” the source shared with Pinkvilla.

Family Drama with ensemble cast

The film is expected to go on floors by the end of 2026, with pre-production slated to begin by mid-2026. Described as a high-energy family drama, the project will feature two male leads and two female leads. While casting is yet to be finalised, the process is expected to begin soon. The film is being planned as Dharma Productions’ major theatrical release for the year.

Is Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 on the cards?

Speculation is also rife that the film could be titled Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 (K3G2). However, sources stress that it is too early to confirm the title. What is certain is that the film will echo the emotional tone of the 2001 blockbuster that starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan.

With casting and official announcements still under wraps, more updates on the project are expected in the coming months.
