Last week, Kangana Ranaut returned to the big screen with her directorial venture Emergency, which entered into direct competition with Azaad, a film featuring Ajay Devgn, Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan. Now that a week has passed since their release, it’s time to analyse which film performed better at the box office and where they currently stand. The box office collections of both films, as reported by Sacnilk, offer a clear picture of their performance over the first week.
Emergency, which stars Kangana Ranaut alongside Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman and the late Satish Kaushik, collected Rs 2.5 crore on its opening day. The collections saw a steady rise over the weekend, with Rs 3.6 crore on Saturday and Rs 4.25 crore on Sunday. However, the film witnessed a drop during the weekdays, earning Rs 1.05 crore on Monday, Rs 1 crore on both Tuesday and Wednesday, and Rs 1.01 crore on Thursday. By the end of its first week, Emergency amassed a total of Rs 14.41 crore. The film is a political drama based on the life of India’s late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focusing on the Emergency period she imposed in 1975.
On the other hand, Azaad, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, opened with a relatively modest Rs 1.5 crore on Friday. The collections dipped slightly over the weekend, with Rs 1.3 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.75 crore on Sunday. The film struggled during the weekdays, earning Rs 65 lakh on Monday, Rs 60 lakh on Tuesday, Rs 55 lakh on Wednesday, and Rs 42 lakh on Thursday. By the end of its first week, Azaad garnered a total of Rs 6.77 crore. The film, a historical drama, stars Ajay Devgn alongside Diana Penty and Piyush Mishra, and marked the Bollywood debut of Raveena Tandon’s daughter, Rasha Thadani, and Ajay Devgn’s nephew, Aaman Devgan.
With Emergency leading significantly in box office collections, it appears to have outshined Azaad in its first week. However, both films cater to distinct genres and audiences, making their performances a reflection of viewer preferences.
