Abhishek Bachchan, known for his illustrious career as an actor, is also a keen and discerning businessman. In a recent conversation, the Guru star shared his views on investing in Indian companies and how he’s become an advocate for the “Make in India” movement. With a reputation for being a cautious investor, Abhishek expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Indian startups and companies, highlighting how the national business landscape has changed for the better.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Abhishek said, “What excites me with the family office is the India story—companies emerging from India. The ‘Make in India’ initiative is something I truly support. Gone are the days when we saw ourselves as inferior. Today, India leads in many sectors, and I’m proud to be part of that transformation.”
Reflecting on how generational mindsets have changed over the years, Abhishek recollects how, at a young age, most people across India believed it was only achievable in Europe or the U.S. However, he said such thinking is dissolving, and people today are realizing it is good to build future careers within their motherland, India.
Abhishek was particularly impressed by his niece, Navya Naveli Nanda, who decided to return to India after studying in New York. He recalled her telling him, “I want to come back to India and make a difference here.” He added, “I love that. It’s inspiring, and I enjoy connecting with the younger generation. We have so much to learn from them. It’s incredibly exciting to work on Indian-made products and eventually take them to the global stage.” Navya, who is now a student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, continues her academic journey in India.
When discussing the investment approach of the Bachchan family, Abhishek said he was “very conservative” and that he likes to let results speak for themselves. “In business, I prefer working with people who inspire me,” he said, underscoring his thoughtful, hands-on approach to investment.
Jr Bachchan also shared that he is associated with various consumer brands, like Naagin Hot Sauce and Vahdam Tea. He explains how he had come across Naagin Sauce the first time, which made him feel an instant connect. “I loved it as a consumer first,” he shares. “I reached out to the founders-fellow Bandra residents-and said, ‘Let’s work together to take this brand forward.'”
Abhishek’s investment philosophy reflects an emotional commitment to Indian businesses and an understanding of their growth through national pride, being proud of India’s place in the changing landscape of the world economy.
