The CUET-UG will transition to being exclusively a computer-based test (CBT) starting in 2025, with students allowed to choose subjects beyond those studied in class 12, as announced by UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar. During an interaction with PTI, Kumar outlined key changes proposed by an expert panel after a review of the exam.

From 2025, the CUET-UG will no longer be conducted in hybrid mode, as was done in 2024. Instead, it will be solely in CBT format. The number of subjects available for selection will be reduced from 63 to 37, with admissions for the dropped subjects determined through scores from the General Aptitude Test (GAT).

Kumar emphasized the move toward flexibility, allowing candidates to opt for subjects outside their class 12 curriculum to encourage interdisciplinary studies. Additionally, the number of subjects a candidate can appear for will be capped at five, down from six previously.

Further modifications include standardising the exam duration to 60 minutes for all subjects, eliminating optional questions, and making all questions mandatory.

Since its first edition in 2022, CUET-UG has faced challenges, including technical glitches and score normalization due to multiple shifts. The hybrid format introduced in 2024 also encountered disruptions, with exams in Delhi canceled last minute due to logistical issues.
