BITS Pilani claims to have recently received a contribution from its alumni. Pratul Shroff (1971 Batch), an alumnus and former founder and CEO of Einfochips has pledged a significant amount of $1 million dollars to the institution’s endowment fund, with an additional commitment of Rs 4.5 crores over the next five years. This contribution aims to establish 10 100% fellowships for cutting-edge research and ten 100% scholarships for deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds at BITS Pilani, according to an official release.
“I owe much of my success to BITS Pilani, which played a pivotal role in shaping my life. The institution’s focus on physics and mathematics ignited my passion for modern and quantum physics. It’s not only a pleasure but also my responsibility to give back to my alma mater,” Shroff said.
He highlighted the importance of robust endowments in creating world-class educational institutions, drawing parallels with esteemed institutions in the United States like Harvard, Yale and Stanford, which were established through generous endowments in the 19th century. He expressed hope that successful entrepreneurs and industrialists would continue to support institutions like BITS Pilani to foster a brighter future for India, the release mentioned.
The culture of alumni giving back at BITS Pilani is gaining momentum, evident from the substantial contributions made during batch reunions and through CSR funding. Alumni reunions held between November and December 2023 resulted in contributions exceeding $1.4 million (Rs 11.5 crore), while the total funds raised from alumni and CSR funding in the previous financial year surpassed Rs 32 crore, as per the release.
“I would like to use this opportunity to thank our Alumni sincerely for their significant contribution and to emphasise BITS Pilani is more than an institution—it is a beloved home for our alumni, committed to advancing education, research, and innovation,” V Ramgopal Rao, vice chancellor, BITS Pilani, said.
