The shutdown of MTV’s music channels has emotionally affected people from across generations, especially among Baby Boomers and Gen X viewers who grew up with the channel. After 44 years of shaping global pop culture, MTV’s dedicated music platforms are quietly going off air.
Anand Mahindra’s nostalgic reaction
Industrialist Anand Mahindra summed up the mood with a major throwback line that once defined an era, “I want my MTV.” Mahindra explained how deeply MTV influenced music and youth culture when it first launched. “The end of MTV hits differently for Baby Boomers like me. When it launched in 1981, it changed how we heard and saw music. It shaped tastes, icons and the sense of what was cool.” He concluded saying, “I guess this deserves one last chorus by Sting: ‘I want my MTV.’”

The end of an era for music television
According to BBC News, several MTV music channels will no longer be available. These include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.Launched in the US in 1981, MTV expanded to Europe in 1987, including broadcasts in the UK. A decade later, the network introduced a dedicated UK channel.
For many viewers, MTV was more than just television—it was how new music was discovered, long before streaming apps and social media took over.
Meanwhile, MTV HD will continue to operate, though it will not air music videos. The channel stopped showing music videos back in 2011 and has since focused mainly on reality TV shows. US versions of MTV’s music channels are expected to remain unaffected for now.
As per the BBC, this is due to Paramount’s larger plan to cut over $500 million from its global business operations. The decision comes due to changing viewer habits, with music consumption now driven largely by digital platforms rather than television. Still, for millions who grew up glued to MTV, the shutdown feels like the final fade-out of a total cultural change.
‘My childhood is over’
Netizens also stepped in remembering their favourite channel. A user noted on Reddit, “So Iconic! I will always remember watching music videos late at night with my little bro. Discovered so much stuff that defined my life for so long. So many fun memories. What a great way to end their broadcast.”
Another added, “Damn. End of an era. You couldn’t be a kid in the 90s without MTV. It was everything.”
“I never stopped watching music videos. I actively watched the MTV Live channel and their Epic.Awesome,Videos
show. It was an amazing source for new and burgeoning artists. I’ll definitely miss seeing videos on my TV screen,” stated a netizen.
“This hurts my heart so much. MTV and VH1 raised me. I was hoping they’d go out the way they came in,” added another.
