As the new academic year dawns, educational institutions worldwide are gearing up to welcome students to their campuses. This period marks a pivotal moment, underscoring the need for robust measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. The education sector has faced significant challenges in recent years, navigating a complex landscape marked by public health crises, security threats and instances of violence.
Addressing the surge in school violence
The statistics are alarming and illustrate the urgency of addressing these issues. Over 246 million children and adolescents experience school violence annually. Additionally, there were approximately 6,000 reported attacks on schools, universities, students and educators in 2022 and 2023—an increase of nearly 20% compared to the previous two years, as reported by International SOS, a global health and security risk management firm.
These figures highlight the necessity for vigilance within the education sector. The organisation noted a 9% increase in requests for information and assistance from educational institutions in 2023 compared to the previous year. In just the first half of 2024, a further 6% increase in such requests has been observed, signalling that the challenges faced by schools and universities are ongoing and evolving.
“In the face of today’s complex global health challenges, educational institutions must embrace a comprehensive approach to campus health, wellbeing and safety,” says Dr. Rodrigo Rodriguez-Fernandez, Global Health Advisor, Wellness and Mental Health at International SOS. “This involves not only responding to emerging health risks but also proactively fostering an environment that promotes the physical and psychological wellbeing of students and staff.”
Proactive safety measures for educational institutions
By anticipating and understanding evolving health threats, institutions can establish resilient systems that enhance the adaptability and overall resilience of the campus community.
In light of these challenges, International SOS has provided essential health and safety recommendations for educational institutions. Regular and thorough risk assessments are crucial for identifying and mitigating potential hazards, ensuring a secure environment for students, faculty and staff. Collaboration with local health authorities is also vital in implementing comprehensive health guidelines.
Additionally, fostering a safe and inclusive environment is equally important, with educational programmes and strict policies against bullying ensuring a respectful and positive campus culture.
Henning Snyman, Security Director at International SOS, stresses the importance of a proactive approach to campus security. “With the increase in student activism and campus protests worldwide, it is vital for institutions to address the changing security landscape. As on-campus activities and study abroad programmes resume, staying informed and adjusting to new risks is crucial. Regularly updating security protocols and training programmes is essential to maintaining a safe learning environment,” he advises.
As students return to their studies, the responsibility of educational institutions to safeguard their health, wellbeing and security has never been more critical. By implementing these recommendations and staying vigilant, schools and universities can create a safer and more resilient academic environment for everyone.
