A 43-year-old doctor from Thane district in Maharashtra allegedly jumped into the Arabian Sea from the Atal Setu bridge road in Mumbai on Monday afternoon.
The woman, identified as Kinjal Kantilal Shah, had been battling depression for several years and was undergoing treatment. Shah resided with her father at the Navin Asha building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road.
Despite the search, the woman’s body has not yet been found. However, a suicide note recovered from her residence indicated that she was suffering from severe depression over the last eight years and had decided to end her life.
The note also mentioned that nobody should be held responsible for her death, not even the taxi driver who ferried her to the spot, the police official said, PTI reported.
On the afternoon of March 18, she took a taxi from near her Parel residence and directed the driver to take her to the Atal Setu bridge. Approximately 14.3 kilometres from Mumbai, she asked the driver to stop. “The driver was reluctant, but as she insisted, the driver stopped, following which she got off and went a few steps behind before jumping off the bridge,” said senior police inspector Rajendra Kote of the Nhava Sheva police station.
The taxi driver subsequently alerted the Navi Mumbai police, who, with the assistance of coastal police, local villagers, and rescuers, initiated a search operation.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that she hailed from Parel, and her father had filed a missing person report at the Bhoiwada police station. The police noted that she had informed her father of her outing for work on Monday.
Upon returning home, her father discovered the suicide note, indicating her intention to end her life at the Atal Setu bridge, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

“The father then reported the matter at the Bhoiwada police station. We then started looking for her, and while scrutinizing the CCTV footage, we learned that she boarded a taxi at around 1.30 pm and while we were looking for more details on her movement, we came to know that she jumped off the bridge,” an officer said, according to The Indian Express.
While the Bhoiwada police in Mumbai recorded the missing report, the Nhava Sheva police in Navi Mumbai documented the incident in their records.
