A 26-year-old Indian student from Telangana, G Praveen, was allegedly found dead in the United States with bullet wounds, his family said on Wednesday. However, the exact cause of his death remains unknown, pending an autopsy, reported news agency PTI.
Praveen, who was pursuing his Master’s degree in Wisconsin’s Milwaukee, had traveled to the US in 2023 after completing his Bachelor in Technology from Hyderabad. His family was informed by US authorities on Wednesday morning about his death.
According to Praveen’s cousin, Arun, the authorities said his body was found with bullet wounds. While there are suspicions that unknown assailants may have shot and killed him, the official cause of death will be confirmed after an autopsy.
Family in Shock, Seeks Government Help
Before receiving the devastating news, Praveen had attempted to call his father early Wednesday morning. However, his father, who was asleep at the time, missed the call, Arun said.
The family, residing in the Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad, is in deep shock and has approached local political leaders and MLAs for assistance in bringing back Praveen’s body.
Praveen had last visited India in December 2024 before returning to the US in January this year.
Similar Cases of Telangana Students Dying in the US
Praveen’s death is the latest in a series of tragic incidents involving Indian students from Telangana in the United States.
In November 2024, a student from Telangana’s Khammam city was allegedly shot dead in the US. Another student from Hyderabad suffered a similar fate in January this year, PTI reported.
The Indian government and local authorities are expected to take up the matter with US officials as concerns grow over the safety of Indian students abroad.
