Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 Passed In Parliament Highlights: The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed by the Parliament after a nod from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X on Friday morning and said that the passage of the Bill is a “watershed moment” and will “particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity”. He thanked the MPs for being vocal with their perspectives and their support and effort in pushing the Bill. He also extended a special thanks to the people who sent their inputs to the Parliamentary committee.

What is Waqf Amendment Bill 2025?

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, as per the government, aims to improve the management of Waqf properties while also protecting heritage sites and individual property rights. There have been many disputes in different states over who owns Waqf properties, which has led to several legal issues in the communities. As of September 2024, Waqf Boards in 25 states and union territories have listed 5,973 government properties as Waqf properties.

Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 Benefits

Waqf plays an important role in supporting religious, charitable, and social welfare activities, especially for the poor. However, the government claims that its impact has often been limited due to poor management, illegal occupation, and a lack of transparency. With the Bill, there will be more transparency and accountability as there will be a centralised digital portal.

The Bill also aims to improve the economic and social status of Muslim women, especially widows and divorced women, by encouraging self-help groups (SHGs) and financial independence programs.
