Uttarakhand’s higher reaches in the Garhwal region experienced early snowfall on Thursday as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state in the coming days. The IMD predicted light to moderate rain from September 12 to 14, with isolated areas expected to receive heavy downpours.
Several districts, including Dehradun and Chamoli, have closed schools as a precautionary measure following the alert. Both the Kumaon and Garhwal regions have been drenched since Thursday morning, while snowfall was reported at an altitude of 5,000 meters in Garhwal’s high Himalayan areas.
In the wake of the torrential rains, the Sonprayag-Gaurikund road on the Kedarnath trekking route has been closed. Stranded pilgrims in Gaurikund, however, will only be charged for one day’s stay, according to the Gaurikund Vyapar Mandal, as hotel owners have agreed to waive additional fees.
The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has issued directives to District Magistrates to take full precautions, warning of potential waterlogging in the plains and landslides in hilly regions. The authority highlighted specific areas, including Chamoli, Dehradun, and Haridwar, among others, that are likely to be severely impacted by the heavy rains on Thursday and Friday.
As the state braces for the incoming weather challenges, residents and travelers are urged to stay cautious, particularly in areas prone to landslides and flash floods. The administration remains on high alert, prepared to respond to any emergencies.
