The Congress on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi can hold a roadshow in Assam’s Guwahati, but can’t go to Manipur’s Imphal, which has been embroiled in ethnic clashes since May last year.
The opposition party’s attack came a day after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met Home Minister Amit Shah.
In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “9 months to the day and yet no meeting with the PM who continues to maintain total silence on Manipur. The PM goes to Guwahati for a road show but cannot and will not go to Imphal. A horrific ANYAY by the PM on the people of Manipur!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday rolled out development projects worth Rs 11,600 crore in Assam at a function at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara in Guwahati. The PM also started the second edition of ‘Asom Mala’ roads. He has also laid the foundation stones for the proposed Karimganj Medical College and Hospital.
He arrived in Guwahati on Saturday evening and stayed the night at the Koinadhara State Guest House in the city.
The PM also held a meeting with BJP’s state core committee, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, state BJP President Bhabesh Kalita and other party leaders were present.
On Saturday, Manipur CM Singh said that the Union government is set to “take important decisions” in the interests of people.
Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 last year after a tribal solidarity march was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The violence has so far claimed the lives of over 200 people.
