Kolkata Police on Friday, July 4, took the four accused in the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student to South Calcutta Law College to reconstruct the crime scene, as part of their ongoing investigation. The incident, which has sparked massive outrage across West Bengal, reportedly took place on the evening of June 25 within the college premises.
According to a senior police officer, the three main accused—Monojit Mishra, a former student and contractual staff; Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, both current students—along with college security guard Pinaki Banerjee, were brought to the college around 4:30 a.m. The crime scene reconstruction took nearly four hours.
“The reconstruction of the crime scene is a vital part of the investigation. We have completed the task today. The accused were taken to the law college campus early this morning and later brought back to the police station,” said an officer involved in the probe.
The exercise was carried out under tight security and monitored closely by the Kolkata Police’s Detective Department, which is handling the investigation. “Our findings will now be cross-checked with the woman’s allegations and other available evidence,” the officer added.
According to the complaint filed by the first-year student, the crime unfolded over more than three hours and took place in multiple locations within the campus, including the guard’s room. Mishra allegedly led the assault, with the other two students standing by and assisting him. The security guard, Banerjee, is accused of deliberately turning a blind eye to the crime.
Medical and circumstantial evidence reportedly support the survivor’s claims. Banerjee, whose police remand ended on July 4, is expected to be produced in court later in the day.
The brutal assault has led to public outrage and political tension, especially due to Mishra’s links with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing. Protests have erupted across the city, demanding swift justice and accountability from the authorities.
