One person was killed and six were injured in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district when a man on a two-wheeler, carrying a shipment of ‘onion bombs’ (a specialty Diwali firecracker) hit a pothole near a local temple, and the firecrackers fell off and exploded.

The bike had hit a pothole and the ‘bombs’ fell off and exploded, NDTV reported.

CCTV footage of the incident showed two men on a white scooter driving through a narrow street at around 12.17 pm. Suddenly, the bike exploded as it approached a point where the street widens and meets a main road. A small group of men – five to six – was at the junction. The video then showed an explosion and some persons running away with smoke engulfing the area.

The incident occurred when two persons were transporting a bag of firecrackers bought for Diwali celebrations.

A senior official told PTI the bag contained “onion bombs” and other crackers that exploded after falling on the road.

While the rider, identified as Sudhakar, died on the spot, the pillion rider and several other people standing on the road were injured. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
