A 51-year-old man tried to end his life by slitting his throat with a knife on the premises of Karnataka High Court in front of Chief Justice N V Anjaria on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at around 12.15 pm when the man, S Chinnam Srinivas, and his wife entered the court hall which was presided over by the Chief Justice and Justice H B Prabhakara Sastry.

Once the petition was read out, Srinivas pulled out a knife from his trouser pocket and slit his throat. Chief Justice Anjaria immediately called the police and asked them to take Srinivas to the hospital, Indian Express reported.

The man was immediately rushed to a hospital where is undergoing treatment. “His food pipe has been damaged due to the cut and he is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” said a police officer.

Justice Sastry, who was due to retire on Wednesday, expressed anxiousness over the incident and asked how Srinivas managed to pass through security with a knife in his possession.

Upon questioning Srinivas’s wife, the police came to know that the couple was upset since the Karnataka High Court had earlier quashed an FIR filed in Mysuru in 2021 against a Hyderabad-based construction firm. Srinivas has alleged that the firm has duped him of Rs 93 lakh.

The High Court had directed Srinivas to approach the lower court to resolve the matter since it is a civil dispute.

Vidhana Soudha police have registered a case and are probing the matter.
