Election Commission Lok Sabha Election Schedule Announcement: Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has arrived at the Election Commission of India to announce the poll schedule for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Election today. The poll panel will hold a press conference at 3 pm to announce the full phase-wise schedule. As per media reports, the counting of the vote is likely to be held in May. Notably, the tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha will end on June 16. As soon as the dates are announced, Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will be enforced across the country. The MCC will stay in place till Lok Sabha Election Results are declared. Once the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is enforced, ministers are prohibited from approving grants or disbursements from discretionary funds.
On ECI to announce Lok Sabha Polls 2024 dates, Congress leader Pawan Khera said that Congress is geared up for the upcoming elections. "Bharat Jodo Yatra has highlighted our (Congress') agenda for the Lok Sabha Polls 2024... Congress has brought 'Guarantee'. The people of the nation trust Congress' guarantee," Khera told ANI.

On Wednesday, the BJP unveiled its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, with notable changes like excluding at least 28 sitting MPs and the inclusion of three former Chief Ministers. In contrast, the Congress party has announced a total of 82 candidates thus far for the upcoming high-stakes Lok Sabha polls.

Increasing its criticism of the government regarding the electoral bonds controversy, Congress on Saturday alleged that corporate India has been coerced out of thousands of crores and emphasized the urgent necessity for an independent investigation monitored by the Supreme Court. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh outlined four purportedly corrupt tactics employed by the BJP, namely, "Chanda Do, Dhandha Lo" (donate to get business), "Hafta Vasuli" (extortion), "Theka Lo-Rishvat Do" (secure contracts by giving bribes), and "Farzi Company - Dakait Sangni" (loot through shell companies). Ramesh underscored these patterns of corruption as alarming, based on an initial analysis of the data surrounding the electoral bond scandal.
At a gathering of party workers in Mumbai's Colaba area, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray asserted that disclosures regarding the electoral bonds scheme have brought to light the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) actions. Thackeray emphasized that despite routinely accusing the Congress of plundering the nation, the BJP itself has received a significant sum of Rs 8,000 crore through electoral bonds. Thackeray suggested that comparing this amount with what the Congress received would clearly reveal who has been engaging in wrongdoing.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday expressed the BJP's eagerness for the Lok Sabha elections to be conducted promptly, emphasizing that the people of Himachal Pradesh are eager to respond strongly to the state government's false promises made over the past 15 months. "Himachal's residents are poised to vote against the state government, seeking to hold them accountable for their deceptive commitments," Thakur said during a press briefing in Bilaspur on Friday.

Nana Patole, the State Congress President, told ANI during Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in Mumbai today that the Maharashtra Congress is fully prepared for elections. He said that the people of Maharashtra have a singular goal: to remove the BJP from power. Patole criticized the Modi government, accusing it of selling dreams and betraying the nation.
The ECI states that the ruling party is prohibited from monopolizing rest houses, dak bungalows, or other government accommodations. Additionally, ministers and other authoritative figures are barred from using public funds for advertising their parties in newspapers or any other media outlets.
The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other state governments, will be barred from announcing financial grants or making commitments, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI). Once the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is enforced after the announcement of Lok Sabha poll dates, ministers are prohibited from approving grants or disbursements from discretionary funds.
Furthermore, government authorities are forbidden from utilizing government resources for election-related activities, and the deployment of official machinery or personnel for electioneering purposes is strictly prohibited.

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1988 Uttarakhand cadre, previously held the position of Secretary to the Lokpal. On February 3 of this year, he was appointed as the Election Commissioner on a contract basis for a duration of one year. His term was slated to conclude on February 4, 2025.
Gyanesh Kumar, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1988 Kerala cadre, concluded his tenure as Cooperation Secretary on January 31, 2024. Previously, Kumar held prominent positions including Parliamentary Affairs Secretary at the Centre and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs during the 2019 abrogation of Article 370.
The voting process, anticipated to be held in April, is likely to be organized in seven to eight phases this year. In the previous 2019 elections, the voting took place in over seven phases.
The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is issued by the Election Commission on the same day that election dates are announced. It serves as a comprehensive set of guidelines outlining the expected conduct for political parties and candidates during the electoral process. These guidelines cover various aspects including rallies, speeches, election manifestos, general conduct, and more.
Senator Michael Bennet, a prominent figure in American politics and a member of the Senate Intelligence and Rules Committees, penned a letter on Friday which was addressed to key executives at major US social media companies, reported PTI. In his letter to the executives of Alphabet, Meta, TikTok, and X, Bennet requested information from these companies regarding their election preparedness in multiple countries, notably India.

He emphasizes that the advancement of artificial intelligence technology has heightened the risks to democratic processes and political stability. With the widespread availability of sophisticated AI tools, individuals can now create highly realistic images, videos, and audio, posing significant challenges to safeguarding the integrity of elections.
In the 2019 General Elections, the BJP-led NDA secured a significant victory, clinching 353 out of the total 543 official seats. Of these, the BJP alone secured 303 seats, surpassing the required majority mark of 272 by a margin of 31 seats. The NDA coalition comprised a total of 37 parties, including the National People’s Party, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar), Janata Dal (Secular), Janata Dal (United), and others, rallying under its banner.
