The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has revealed that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was operating a “criminal nexus” along with his co-accused for “wrongful gains,” according to initial findings. An officer disclosed the information on Saturday, stating that the central probe agency presented its findings to a special court earlier this week.

The CBI arrested Ghosh, along with two vendors and his security personnel, over allegations of financial irregularities at the state-run hospital. This investigation comes amidst national protests following the rape-murder of a young doctor from the hospital.

Long-standing vendor relationships under scrutiny

According to the investigation, the two vendors involved had connections with Ghosh dating back to his tenure at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital between 2016 and 2018. They were allegedly awarded contracts at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital due to their proximity to Ghosh, who was later posted at Calcutta National Medical College before taking charge at RGKMC&H in 2021.

Favours for personal gain

The CBI also uncovered that Ghosh awarded a contract for a café inside the hospital to the wife of his security guard. The investigation revealed that Ghosh had been consistently favouring these vendors for supplying hospital materials, demonstrating a pattern of biassed and corrupt practices.

The CBI presented its findings to the special court in Alipore, stating, “Evidence collected during the investigation shows Dr. Sandip Ghosh, in criminal nexus with other co-accused, caused wrongful loss to the government and corresponding wrongful gain to himself and his accomplices.”

Further investigation is underway to examine the role of Ghosh’s security guard, who was allegedly involved in contacting vendors to sell the hospital’s biomedical waste.
