What happened in 2020 local elections

In the 2020 Kerala local body elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured a strong victory and maintained control across most local bodies. The voter turnout that year was 76.2%, which was a slight drop of 1.5% from 2015. The LDF received 40.2% of the votes, an increase of 2.8%, and won 514 grama panchayats, 108 block panchayats, 11 district panchayats, 35 municipalities and 5 corporations.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) got 37.9% of the votes, a dip of 0.7%, and won 321 grama panchayats, 38 block panchayats, 1 district panchayat, 23 municipalities and 1 corporation. The NDA secured a 15% vote share, which was an increase of 1.7%, and won 19 grama panchayats along with a few smaller gains in other areas.

Voter demographics and candidate details

In this phase of the Kerala local body elections, around 1.53 crore people are eligible to vote. This includes 80.90 lakh women, 72.46 lakh men and 161 transgender voters.

The voter list also has 3,293 overseas voters. A total of 38,994 candidates are contesting: 28,274 for grama panchayats, 3,742 for block panchayats, 681 for district panchayats, 5,546 for municipalities and 751 for the three corporations – Kozhikode, Kannur and Thrissur.

The result of these elections will be important because it will influence the political atmosphere before the 2026 Assembly elections. Local body polls have traditionally shown the public mood early. In both 2010 and 2015, the ruling front lost the local body elections, and the Opposition went on to win the 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections. The 2025 local body polls also come just a year after the Lok Sabha elections, where the LDF again managed to win only one seat, similar to its performance in 2019.
