Death toll in the blasts that took place during a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention at Kalamassery near Kochi in October has risen to six, PTI reported on Friday, citing government sources.

The victim identified as 24-year-Malayatoor resident Praveen passed away at a private hospital on Thursday, according to authorities at the hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

“He was in the ICU. He passed away at 10.40 PM on Thursday,” a hospital source told PTI.

Praveen’s mother, who sustained serious injuries in the blasts, had succumbed to her wounds on November 11. His younger sister, Libina, had also lost her life on October 30, a day after the explosions occurred during the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ gathering.

The medical board, responsible for treating the blast survivors, is yet to release a medical bulletin specifying the number of patients currently undergoing treatment.

The blasts occurred during the final day of a three-day-long prayer meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses on October 29. The multiple blasts at the international convention centre in Kalamassery left over 50 individuals injured, some severely.

Libina died at Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital on October 30, while two women from the gathering lost their lives on the day of the blasts.

On November 6, Moly Joy from Kalamassery succumbed to injuries at a private hospital.

Following the incident, Dominic Martin, claiming to be an estranged Jehovah’s Witnesses member, surrendered to the police in Thrissur district, alleging responsibility for the multiple blasts. The police subsequently recorded his arrest.

He has been booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (punishment for murder) and Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act, as well as relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
