India on Monday termed as “deeply regrettable” a breach of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission’s premises in Agartala during protests against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said diplomatic and consular properties should never be targeted. It announced enhanced security for the Bangladeshi mission in New Delhi and its other consular offices across the country.

“The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable,” the MEA said in a statement.

The statement added that the Centre is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their deputy/assistant high commissions in the country.

The incident unfolded as thousands of protesters marched in Agartala, the capital of Tripura, voicing anger over the arrest of Das on sedition charges and rising violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that over 50 demonstrators entered the consular premises, raising alarm among those present.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have been under strain since an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed power in August, replacing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. New Delhi has consistently raised concerns over increasing extremist rhetoric and violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh.

India also expressed hope that Das’s case would be handled justly and transparently. “Bangladesh’s interim government must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities,” the MEA said on Friday.

This comes amid escalating tensions, with India reiterating its commitment to safeguarding diplomatic properties and addressing issues with the neighboring country.
