Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday was named as the chairperson of the Opposition-led INDIA bloc, reported The Indian Express, citing sources.
The decision was made during a virtual meeting of the heads of the Opposition parties that was held on Saturday. Leaders of the Trinamool Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and the Samajwadi Party did not attend the meeting, sources said.
Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar was also chosen as the front’s convener, but he has “temporarily chosen to withdraw from the alliance’s convener race on the ground that he would only accept it if there is a consensus among allies,” the sources said.
As many as 28 opposition parties have come together under the banner of ‘INDIA’ to take on the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
