A Belgian court has denied bail to fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, a prime accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, ANI reported on Tuesday (April 22). The decision came after a three-judge bench heard arguments from both sides and ruled against granting Choksi bail.

Mehul Choksi informed the court that he was in poor health and expressed a desire to be with his family. He said he was willing to comply with any conditions for bail, including wearing a GPS-enabled tracking anklet if required. However, the court turned down his request for bail.

Choksi, who is wanted by Indian authorities in connection with the PNB loan scam, was recently arrested in Belgium following a request from India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

His legal team has indicated plans to challenge the arrest, citing alleged violations of natural justice. They are also expected to argue that Choksi’s deteriorating health and his community ties make him an unlikely flight risk, despite his fugitive status.
