On the last day of the filing of RK Nagar bypoll nominations, the news from the Election Commission is flying thick and fast. While EC has denied both AIADMK factions from using the original ‘two leaf’ symbol, today it has gome ahead and announced the icons both these rival factions can contest under. The rivals have been tussling for supremacy over control of the party ever since the demise of party supremo and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa. While Sasikala has emerged as the interim General Secretary of AIADMK, O Panneerselvam has suffered a number of setbacks and has lost his position as the chief minister. His stand is that there is no position for the interim General Secretary’s post in AIADMK constitution, but Sasikala is saying it is official as there is the precedence of Jaya herself being made interim General Secretary when she took over the party decades ago. 7:45 pm: DMK leader MK Stalin said those who say that his party would gain after AIADMK symbol is frozen is “propaganda”. He said that they defeated them (AIADMK) when MGR was there and when Jayalalithaa was there.

5:15 pm: BJP nominee and noted music director Gangai Amaran also filed his nomination today. Opposition DMK’s Maruthu Ganesh has already filed his papers.

4:45 pm: Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa also filed her nomination for the bypoll representing ‘MGR Amma Deepa Peravai’, floated by her after the demise of her aunt.

4:20 pm: The bypoll is being held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jayalalithaa and today is the last day for the filing of nominations.

4:03 pm: AIADMK Deputy General Secretary T T V Dinakaran and O Panneerselvam-led rebel group’s senior
leader E Madhusudhanan today filed their nominations for the R K Nagar Assembly constituency bypoll on April 12.

3:37 pm: Earlier, when the AIADMK symbol was frozen we had won, we will win this time too: MK Stalin, DMK

3:12 pm:  As per reports, the EC accepted the request of the Sasikala camp for allotting it the “hat” symbol.
The faction will now contest the R K Nagar by-election as AIADMK (Amma).

2:16 pm: The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa who was elected from RK Nagar.

1:58 pm: E Madhusudhanan of the OPS camp today filed his nomination at R K Nagar. T T V Dinakaran of the Sasikala faction and Maruthu Ganesh of DMK will also be contesting the bypoll.

1:30 pm: “People of this constituency desire rule of O Panneerselvam in Tamil Nadu. He has been working for their welfare…my victory prospects in this election are bright,”says E Madhusudan told reporters after filing his nomination.

12:58 pm: DMK’s no confidence motion against speaker fails even after doing division voting.122 MLAs voted against the resolution.

12:38 pm: In a setback for DMK, its confidence motion against the speaker in Tamil Nadu Assembly, has been defeated by voice vote.

11:29 am: EC has given the symbol of auto rickshaw to Sasikala camp with name AIADMK Amma, however they are asking for hat symbol, instead.

11:14 am: EC gives ‘hat ‘symbol to Sasikala’s faction and ‘lamp’symbol to O Pannerselvam camp.

11:08 am: E Madhusudhanan the only qualified candidate to carry forward Amma’s legacy; to file nomination soon: M Pandiarajan on RK Nagar by poll.

’10:50 am: Actor Rajinikanth tweets on on reports of his supporting a party in RK Nagar bypolls, says he is not supporting any party.

10:30 am: Sasikala have received several letters in jail blaming her for J Jayalaithaa’s death.

10:15 am: O Pannerselvam’s faction also submits their party names as Amma AIADMK and party symbol as electricity pole.

9:45 pm: Sasikala camp currently in Election Office. Submits party name as ADMK Amma. Opts for Auto, cap and bat as symbols.
