A blockbuster year for initial public offerings (IPO) has added 26 new members from the startup community to India’s billionaire club. Leading the pack is 39-year-old Bhavish Aggarwal whose net worth, based on the shares held directly by him, is currently close to Rs 13,000 crore. That’s despite the stock price of Ola Electric having taken a bit of a tumble from its peak of Rs 157 per share.
A listing on the bourses at fabulous premiums and the tremendous investor interest in new age technology companies have made several other startup entrepreneurs get super-rich status with a net worth of a minimum Rs 100 crore. Sriharsha Majety, co-founder of Swiggy, and three other co-founders are among those next on the list. The net worth of the 38-year-old BITS Pilani and IIM Kolkata alumnus is a solid Rs 6,400 crore, with the food delivery and quick commerce business firm commanding a market capitalisation of close to Rs 1.33 lakh crore.
Indeed, many startups cashed in on the investor frenzy this year following peers like Nykaa, Zomato and Delhivery in earlier years. Some of these businesses were started seven-to-eight years ago and are now going public. Engineering graduate Varun Alagh worked with several multinational corporations like Hindustan Unilever and Coca Cola before he and Ghazal Alagh built cosmetics firm Honasa Consumer. Varun Alagh is now worth about Rs 2,670 crore.
Fifty-year-old Supam Maheshwari, an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, founded the online platform for babycare products FirstCry after selling an e-learning company that he had set up.
The Charmain and MD of co-working spaces and managed office solutions firm Awfis Space Solutions, Amit Ramani, is worth Rs 870 crore. The 49-year-old Ramani, who graduated from the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi went on to get a Master’s degree from Cornell University.
Bipin Preet Singh and Upasana Taku who set up One Mobikwik systems, a digital financial services platform, are both engineers. While Singh worked with Intel and NVidia, Taku worked with Paypal before they set out to build Mobikwik. With Mobikwik listing at a phenomenal premium, Singh is worth Rs 619 crore while Taku is worth Rs 421 crore.
Promoters of the travel tech firm Ixigo Rajnish Kumar and Aloke Bajpai are worth Rs 334 crore and Rs 311 crore, respectively.
