In a significant boost to infrastructure development, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently approved the construction of 2,280 km of roads in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab. This project comes with an investment of Rs 4,406 crore and aims to enhance rural livelihoods while improving connectivity with the national highway network.

A Transformative Vision for Border Areas

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming border villages, which were once considered isolated. He stated, “The border area villages were once referred to as the last villages. PM Modi has transformed them into the first villages.” The recent approval follows the earlier initiative, the ‘Vibrant Village Program,’ which focuses on road and telecom connectivity in these regions.

The approved road project reflects a paradigm shift in development policy, aiming to provide facilities in border areas that are comparable to those in other parts of the country. This initiative will significantly impact road and telecom connectivity while also improving essential services like water supply, healthcare, and education.

Enhancing Rural Livelihoods and Connectivity

The development of these roads is expected to enhance rural livelihoods, ease travel for residents, and connect these areas to the larger highway network. By improving access to key resources and services, the project aims to foster socio-economic development in border communities, ensuring they are no longer left behind.

Showcasing India’s Maritime Heritage

In addition to the road project, the Union Cabinet also approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. This complex is set to become the largest maritime heritage site in the world, showcasing India’s rich maritime history.

Minister Vaishnaw announced that the maritime project will be completed in two phases, with funds raised through voluntary contributions. The initiative aims to celebrate and preserve India’s diverse maritime heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s historical significance on the seas.

Continued Focus on Nutritional Security

Moreover, the Cabinet has approved the continuation of the universal supply of fortified rice under all government schemes until December 2028. This initiative, part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), will be 100% funded by the central government and aims to address nutritional deficiencies, particularly anemia, across the country. It encompasses the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), and PM POSHAN schemes in all States and Union Territories.
