Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, has embarked on a transformative project to elevate railway tracks and remove level crossings in Prayagraj. The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion, save travel time, and ensure smooth movement during the Maha Kumbh 2025, scheduled from January 13 to February 26.

Infrastructure Upgrades Ahead of Maha Kumbh

To prepare for the influx of crores of devotees, rail under bridges (RUBs) and rail over bridges (ROBs) have been constructed at nearly all level crossings in Prayagraj and surrounding areas. Officials have confirmed that these developments will be fully operational before the mega spiritual gathering.

Amit Malviya, Senior Public Relations Officer of the Prayagraj Division, highlighted that several crossings were upgraded during the 2019 Kumbh Mela. The remaining projects are now being fast-tracked in collaboration with the Centre and state government to meet the demands of Maha Kumbh 2025.

Key Developments in Prayagraj

  • Construction Milestones: Seven ROBs have been constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 375 crore, while three RUBs are nearing completion.
  • Enhanced Connectivity: Cementing operations on these new structures will commence shortly, ensuring uninterrupted movement for both trains and road traffic.
  • Capacity Boost: An estimated 10,000 trains will operate seamlessly through the Prayagraj division during the event.

Benefits Beyond Maha Kumbh

The removal of level crossings promises long-term benefits for Prayagraj and surrounding areas. These include:

  • Reduced Traffic Congestion: Easier movement for city residents even after the event.
  • Improved Rail Safety: Uninterrupted and secure train operations without delays caused by road-rail conflicts.
  • Economic Growth: The Maha Kumbh has catalyzed industrial growth and commercial development in the region, with upgraded infrastructure playing a key role.

Regional Development

The Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, is not only a spiritual extravaganza but also a driver of regional transformation. With the removal of level crossings and the addition of RUBs and ROBs, the collaboration between Indian Railways and the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation showcases a commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the experience for millions of pilgrims.

These advancements reflect a broader vision of urban development, making Prayagraj a hub of spiritual, economic, and infrastructural progress.
