In preparation for the upcoming Maha Kumbh, Shashi Kant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway, announced that Indian Railways is removing 21 level-crossing gates in Prayagraj to ensure smoother traffic flow.

As part of a major infrastructure overhaul, the removal of these gates will cost approximately Rs 450 crores. “Twenty-one level-crossing gates are being eliminated at a cost of around Rs 450 crores. Fifteen of these gates are ready, and the remaining ones will be operational by December,” Tripathi stated.

In an interview, Tripathi explained, ” During Maha Kumbh, a large number of devotees arrive in Prayagraj…Since there is heavy train movement and public transport on roads, our level-crossing gates impact both their movements.” The aim of this initiative is to reduce congestion, especially given the large crowds expected during the Kumbh, by improving the flow of both road and train traffic.

“Since there crowd will swell during Kumbh, Railways had planned that all the level-crossing gates in Prayagraj would be eliminated…So that there is smooth movement of traffic, both through roads as well train,” Tripathi added.

Enhancing rail infra for Maha Kumbh

This project is part of the Railways’ efforts to enhance infrastructure ahead of the massive Maha Kumbh gathering, which attracts millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj. The removal of these gates will not only alleviate congestion but also improve safety and efficiency for the large crowds expected.

Additionally, the UP Government has deployed 350 shuttle buses to facilitate easy travel for visitors and devotees during the Maha Kumbh 2025. A dedicated team of 22 officers will oversee the system’s efficiency, ensuring smooth operations during the event, which begins on January 13.

To further ensure a seamless experience, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been set up on seven routes leading to Prayagraj to handle emergencies effectively. The Transport Corporation’s toll-free number (1800 1802 877) and WhatsApp helpline (9415049606) will be available 24/7 to assist devotees throughout the event.
