A 27-year-old female wants to return to India after spending just six years in the US. The concern is not unemployment. work stress but the absence of a good social life. In a Reddit post, she wrote, “I am 27F. I have lived in states for 6 years now and am really exhausted of living here. I feel my job abuses my immigration status and I have failed to maintain any social life. I feel like whenever I try to build a life here, block by block, everything just falls apart.”
She also makes it clear that she is not in a position to look for another job. “Worked at a job for 4 years and kept getting sidelined, and now I’m in focus. Too exhausted to even try looking for another job. Also started therapy and started taking antidepressants.“
The poster also asks if she should move back to India or another country, “I am thinking of going to India , will take care of my health and then thinking of opting another degree or working in another country. Do people moving from states to India regret it? What should I prepare myself for ?.”
“If India is home to you, you will never regret it”
Many on the forum gave her tips to move back to India smoothly. A user noted, “Take care of your mental health first. You’re only 27, you have time to have a career to be comfortable with. The US is a lonely place for many immigrants. What do you need to prepare for the move back to India? Do not compare the countries!!! The infrastructure is different, find what interests you, find what brings you comfort. India is sensory overload but we as humans evolve. Indian startup culture is doing better than the US, but interview style is different. You already have 4 years of work experience in the US, you should be able to find a pretty decent job whenever you’re ready!!!.”
Another added, “You may not live the same comfortable life in India.. but you will get your sense of belonging back.” “Whether it’s India, US or any part of the world, nothing is worth your health and well-being. So take your time, and make a call accordingly. However, please avoid making hasty decision so that you don’t regret later in life. I have seen people doing that impulsively and eventually spiralling into depression and sadness. Best wishes with whatever decision you make,” opined a netizen. “You left when you were 21, so you barely ever worked in India.
