At a time where going digital is at the centre of everything that we do, the Australian government has levelled up by launching the ‘Immi’ app that will ease the visa process for the applicants.

It is designed to make identity checks faster and more convenient. Instead of travelling to biometric collection centres, eligible applicants can now submit required details from the comfort of their homes

As stated by Australia’s Department of Home Affairs, the app allows users to scan their passport and capture a live facial photo using their smartphone.

This information is securely sent to the Department of Home Affairs as part of the visa process. The app works on both iOS and Android devices, making digital submissions accessible to more people.

Who can use it and how?

Only those who receive a “Requirement to provide personal identifiers” letter can use the app. This letter contains a Visa Lodgement Number beginning with AUI or AUH, and applicants must already have provided fingerprint biometrics earlier.

Initially rolled out in Pacific nations such as Fiji and Samoa, the service is now available in 34 countries including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and Thailand. Expanding access helps reduce travel time, cut costs and make visa processing quicker.

How the process works

Applicants must scan their passport, confirm that the displayed details are correct, take a clear facial photo and then submit their information for verification. The app guides users through each step with simple instructions and checks. Once everything is successfully uploaded, there is no need to visit a biometric centre again.

Data security concerns

The Department of Home Affairs states that the app does not store any personal data once it has been submitted. If an error occurs, users will simply be asked to repeat the process to ensure accurate capture. After submission, updates usually appear on the applicant’s Immi Account within 24 hours. If additional details are needed, the department will reach out directly.
