With stricter immigration rules and regulations, moving to the US has become a tedious task. At this juncture, an aspiring US immigrant asks in a Reddit post, regardless of the H-1B and Green Card backlog, why do people still want to move to the USA?

The poster writes, “As we all know, Indians in America have a huge EB-2, EB-3 backlog. The situation is so bad that even if your EB-2 or EB-3 is approved, it would take you approximately 30 years to get a green card. Backlogs from 2012 are being cleared now, and during those times, immigration wasn’t that common.”

He says that he works in a field that will help him earn more if he moves to the US. “I can’t fathom the idea of wanting to go to the USA despite knowing that you could potentially never get a green card or only have 60 days to choose an employer who would sponsor your H-1B.

I work in a field that would help me literally mint money if I went to the USA, and I am in love with the diversity, variety and culture there. I would literally sell my soul to live there.” He also questions how people in the USA manage their parents who are living in India.

“We Indians are more interested in following trends”

Netizens had some interesting reactions to the post. A user said, “I mean the return of investment is way too high. US is like a high risk high reward opportunity. Risk is too high that you might have to come back without any job but the reward is you can get a 100-200k job if you are from top school and become a highly skilled individual. In Europe it is impossible to earn that kind of money hence people who can afford the US, don’t choose Europe.”

Another noted, “Many Indians come just to work long enough to pay back their loans and go back… few like me were infected by the American Dream and were ready to stay here for the long haul no matter what. Luckily I found my soulmate who’s a U.S. citizen and I got the GC within 4 years of landing in USA.”

“If you are confident that you can earn really well why not go there and earn (and learn and experience) as much as you can and later go to whatever place you are thinking about now?,” wrote a netizen.

A user added, “Because we Indians are more interested in following trends and money, than use our brains and be passionate or even ethical honestly. We can justify basically anything by saying “the world is like that” or “they are stupid not me”. Like can anyone explain how so many Indian Americans can be supporters of Trump (statistically a majority), someone who has literally made immigration a headache for Indians. It’s simply the “I won’t be affected by this” mentality that changes the moment they realise they are not an exception and then they cry foul play, as if there weren’t sights that things are bad. US is not a good idea to immigrate too, atleast for the near future. Anti immigrate policies are popular and that won’t change in the current administration. It would only intensify if an economic downturn comes. Immigrants are the easiest escape goat, they cannot vote and now can’t even dissent without a fear of losing their VISA.”
