Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the highly anticipated second phase of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro on September 16, marking a major milestone in Gujarat’s urban transport network. This expansion promises to transform commutes between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, cutting travel time to under 45 minutes, a substantial improvement from the current 90-minute road journey during peak traffic.

Modern Infrastructure and Enhanced Connectivity

The new Metro phase will introduce modern air-conditioned coaches and cutting-edge infrastructure, designed to accommodate thousands of daily commuters, including office-goers, students, and tourists. The expansion aims to offer a quicker, more reliable, and cost-effective alternative to road transport. Pushkar Singla, Chief General Manager (Corporate Planning) of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), detailed that Prime Minister Modi will flag off the metro from Sector-1 and travel to GIFT City. He emphasized that Phase II will extend the connectivity of Phase I, linking the Gyaspur-Motera route to Gandhinagar. This development will also integrate with the existing Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), the railway network, and the future bullet train project from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.

Seamless Integration with Existing Transport Networks

The Metro expansion is part of Gujarat’s comprehensive plan to enhance its urban transport infrastructure. It will complement the BRTS, which currently serves around 175,000 daily commuters in Ahmedabad. The new phase will feature interchange points with the railway network and future bullet train services. Singla noted that the Metro’s connection with the BRTS will facilitate smooth transitions between the systems, benefiting passengers from Ranip, Vadaj, and AEC. Key stations like Gandhigram, Kalupur, and Sabarmati will link with the railway network, and future interchange points at Kalupur and Sabarmati will connect with the bullet train project.

Positive Reception from Commuters

Commuters have expressed enthusiasm about the new Metro phase. One passenger shared that the Metro solves traffic problems and saves time. It takes just 20 minutes from Gujarat University to Vastral, which is much faster than by bus or auto. The AC coaches are a great comfort. Another added, The Metro provides significant relief from traffic, whether it’s hot or cold. It’s a fantastic service, and I’m grateful to the Metro management.

As Gujarat advances towards more sustainable urban development, the Metro expansion reflects the state’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
