The port city of Kochi in Kerala is poised to become a vibrant center for ship repair and shipbuilding as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate projects totaling Rs 4000 crore, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.
Key Projects Driving Kochi’s Maritime Ascent
Ahead of Prime Minister Modi‘s two-day visit to Kerala, Minister Sonowal highlighted three pivotal projects – the New Dry Dock (NOD), the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), and the LPG Import Terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
Minister Sonowal emphasized that the inauguration of these projects by the Prime Minister would not only elevate India’s standing in the global maritime sector but also contribute significantly to job creation and support small businesses.
Setting Global Standards: New Dry Dock Project
The New Dry Dock, constructed for Rs 1,799 crores within the existing CSL premises in Kochi, stands out as a flagship project showcasing India’s engineering prowess and project management capabilities. This marine infrastructure, one of the largest in the region, incorporates cutting-edge technology for efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Modernizing Ship Repair: International Ship Repair Facility Project
Costing Rs 970 crores, the ISRF project is established over 42 acres of leased premises at Willingdon Island, Kochi, by the Cochin Port Authority. It aims to modernize and expand CSL’s ship repair capabilities, aspiring to position Kochi as a global ship repair hub and aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of creating ship repair clusters in India.
Strengthening Energy Infrastructure: Indian Oil’s LPG Import Terminal
Indian Oil’s LPG Import Terminal at Puthuvypeen, Kochi, Kerala, built with an investment of Rs 1,236 crores, features state-of-the-art infrastructure. This terminal is expected to significantly enhance India’s energy infrastructure, ensuring a steady supply of LPG and benefiting millions of households and businesses in the region. The project aligns with India’s commitment to accessible and affordable energy for all.
