Energy and environment solutions company Thermax on Monday opened a new manufacturing facility in Chinchwad, Pune, for water and wastewater treatment solutions.

Ashish Bhandari, managing director and CEO of Thermax, said their water and wastewater business had grown 3x in the last four years and continues to grow, driven by regulations, better enforcement of those regulations, transition to sustainable technologies and shortage of water.

“The country will need 2x water by 2047 and there will be no more fresh water available. This business was growing by 20-30% annually, and the company’s aspiration is to make this a Rs 1,000 crore business in FY25,” Bhandari said.

Thermax focuses on the urban segment, which includes industrial, commercial and residential water and wastewater solutions segment. The company has decided to stay out of government and municipal water business.

Thermax’s water and waste solution business includes reverse osmosis, sewage treatment plants, effluent recycling systems and zero liquid discharge solutions. In addition to offering these solutions, the new plant will cater to Thermax’s new technologies to offer softener and filter vessels, tubular membrane modules and capacitive deionisation solutions.

The Rs 45 crore-plant will be supported by nearly 1,000 vendors from Maharashtra and across the country. The facility will also host a remote monitoring setup based on Thermax’s Edge Live digital solution.

Exports would account for 25% of Thermax’s water and wastewater business. The new plant is expected to reduce lead and delivery time and increase productivity.
