Roblox , an online gaming platform, developed a new AI-powered “unified translation model,” stated Cointelegraph. This platform is expected to allow players to converse with one another through text in real-time, despite speaking different languages.
With insights from a February 5, 2024 statement by Dan Sturman, the new system required the firm to build its own in-house LLM. This is expected to enable translation of text-based messages at a base latency of 100 milliseconds making conversations feel instantaneous for users.
“Imagine discovering that your new Roblox friend, a person you’ve been chatting and joking with in a new experience, is actually in Korea — and has been typing in Korean the entire time, while you’ve been typing in English, without either of you noticing,” Dan Sturman, chief technology officer, Roblox, explained.
Sources revealed that the model was trained to understand human slang, with Roblox bringing in human evaluators to translate “popular and trending terms” for each language. Furthermore, Sturman mentioned that this was an ongoing process, with human evaluators updating the system to keep it up with the latest phrases, concluded Cointelegraph.
