According to an official release, Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, announced that it will provide a new grant of $ 4 million (about INR 32 crores) to support a nationwide awareness and capability building initiative by CyberPeace Foundation, a non-profit India-based cybersecurity organisation. The grant is expected to support over 40 million internet users across India, including underserved beneficiaries such as youth, women, rural communities, elderly, through training and community engagement programs.
“Through this initiative, we plan to help Internet users across India become informed, empowered and responsible netizens leading through conversations and actions,” Vineet Kumar, founder, CyberPeace, explained.
The grant is believed to support a multilingual online resource centre that will offer multimedia content and learning materials on identifying and countering misinformation, and on developing responsible online content, in English and 15 Indian languages. It will also include the establishment of helplines across states and regional clusters to identify misinformation and share advisories against them.
“With the new grant to CyberPeace Foundation, we plan to support solutions that speak directly to Google’s DNA, helping first-time internet users chart their path in a digital world with confidence,” Annie Lewin, senior director of global advocacy and head, Asia and Pacific, Google.org, concluded.
