The Nagrota Rally, jointly organised by the Northern Command and the War Wounded Foundation (WWF) on Nov 19-20, aimed at empowering war-wounded soldiers by transforming disability into ability. Founded in Delhi as an NGO by Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi and Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, WWF is led by the presidency of Lt Gen Asit Mistri (Retd).

Retired army personnel play crucial roles in maintaining close liaisons with disabled soldiers across geographic zones. WWF serves as a unified platform for injured soldiers, systematically addressing various issues and projecting them to the appropriate authorities. A Chair of Excellence at USI, New Delhi, conducts research on injured soldiers’ issues, with recommendations presented to the government.

The annual Rally, employing innovative means, addresses challenges faced by soldiers. On Nov 19, Jammu Cantonment witnessed a unique interaction between 110 disabled soldiers and prominent citizens/organizations. Lt Gen Asit Mistry (Retd) elaborated on WWF’s efforts, and the Travel Agents Association, Jammu, facilitated efforts to unite various organizations.

Expressions of gratitude from citizens towards war heroes marked the event, emphasizing sacrifices for freedom. ID Soni highlighted the need to boost soldier morale by including soldiers’ valour in school textbooks. Diverse organizations came together to felicitate brave soldiers, extending support for their employment in various industries.

On Nov 20, a Rally in Nagrota featured the GOC White Knight Corps addressing the gathering, presenting 10 modified scooters to injured soldiers, fostering independence in their daily lives. A symposium covered crucial aspects of soldiers’ rehabilitation, featuring experts in mental and physical health, job opportunities, and motivation. Lt Gen Asit Mistry outlined WWF’s initiatives, ranging from providing modified scooters to financial assistance for daughters’ marriages and supporting disabled veterans in launching new ventures.

The Rally provided a platform for war-wounded soldiers to share positive life experiences, actively participating in social life, sports, welfare activities, and business.

Looking ahead, WWF envisions a helpline to offer counselling to injured soldiers, receiving support from Prof (Dr) Arti Bakshi, former HOD of Jammu University. This collective endeavour exemplifies unwavering commitment to empowering soldiers, turning adversity into triumph through structured and compassionate support systems.
