Teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have initiated a multi-day mission to reunite hostages and detainees with their families in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The operation involves transferring hostages from Gaza to Israeli authorities and Palestinian detainees to the West Bank, emphasizing the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In a role as a neutral intermediary, the ICRC is facilitating the agreement reached by the conflicting parties, ensuring the release of individuals agreed upon during negotiations. Fabrizio Carboni, the ICRC’s regional director, expressed relief at the reunions, acknowledging the indescribable pain felt by separated family members and emphasizing the organization’s commitment to shielding civilians from the hardships of armed conflict.

The ICRC is not directly involved in negotiations but serves to implement the agreed-upon plan as a neutral force. The organization’s focus extends beyond the release of hostages and detainees, with additional medical supplies being delivered to reinforce previous aid efforts in Gaza’s hospitals.

Today’s successful operation saw the release of 24 hostages from Gaza to the Rafah border and 33 Palestinian detainees from Ofer prison to Ramallah. The ICRC emphasizes the humane treatment of all individuals, including children, during the entirety of the release and transfer process.

The real-life impact of the ICRC’s role as a neutral intermediary is evident in the reunification of families, bringing a sense of relief to those who have endured prolonged separation. As the operation continues, the ICRC remains dedicated to its mission, striving for the release of all hostages and the alleviation of suffering caused by armed conflict.
