In a significant move to bolster India-Bangladesh defence relations, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi’s maiden visit to Bangladesh has culminated in a major deal with India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) for an 800-tonne ocean-going tug. This visit strengthens bilateral ties and highlights India’s growing influence in the region’s defence market.

During his four-day visit, Admiral Tripathi engaged in crucial discussions with Bangladesh’s top military officials, including his counterpart Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Chief of the Naval Staff, Bangladesh Navy. The meetings focused on enhancing naval cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration. Admiral Tripathi also paid tribute to the Bravehearts of the Bangladesh Armed Forces at the Shikha Anirban and visited the Bangladesh Military Museum, reinforcing the historical and cultural bonds between the two nations.

A landmark moment of the visit was signing the deal between Bangladesh Navy and GRSE for an 800-tonne ocean-going tug. This contract, valued at approximately US$21 million, is a significant development under the US$500-million line of credit extended to Bangladesh by India for defence procurement. The vessel, which will be delivered within 24 months, is designed to tow ships and conduct rescue operations at sea, enhancing the operational capabilities of the Bangladesh Navy.

The deal is seen as a strategic victory for India, especially in light of the increasing Chinese footprint in Bangladesh’s defence sector. Currently, the Bangladesh Navy operates several Chinese-origin warships and submarines. By securing this contract, India strengthens its defence ties with Bangladesh and positions itself as a reliable regional partner.

A senior defence official commented, “This deal is critical as it helps expand India-Bangladesh maritime engagement beyond joint exercises and training. It also offers logistical convenience due to the proximity of the Kolkata-based GRSE shipyard to Bangladesh.”

Admiral Tripathi’s visit highlights India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies to enhance regional cooperation and counterbalance Chinese influence. The agreement with GRSE is expected to pave the way for future collaborations, benefiting both nations economically and strategically.

Maritime Security

Maritime security watchers have highlighted the strong defence ties between India and Bangladesh, which are a testament to the shared values and mutual respect. This visit has further solidified New Delhi’s commitment to working together for regional peace and stability.

As India continues encouraging Bangladesh to send its naval assets to Indian shipyards for repair and refit, this visit sets a positive precedent for future defence cooperation. The success of Admiral Tripathi’s visit clearly indicates the robust and growing partnership between the two neighbouring countries, promising a prosperous future for both.
