Tinder has launched Tinder U in India, an in-app feature designed exclusively for college and university students. Aimed at facilitating campus connections, the feature allows students to interact with peers within their own institution and nearby colleges, making online dating more localized and relevant.

To access Tinder U, students must verify their identity using a valid college email address (ending in .edu.in, .ac.in, or .in). Once verified, users can add college details, extracurricular affiliations, and interests to their profiles, potentially making matches more meaningful.

The move aligns with changing dating patterns among young Indians. A survey by OnePoll found that 57% of Indian adults aged 18-25 have formed meaningful relationships via dating apps. Additionally, 67% of respondents reported having dated someone they met online, while 55% said they had developed friendships through such platforms.

A notable aspect of Tinder U is its emphasis on shared interests. According to the survey, 39% of users find common hobbies and passions to be the most attractive aspect of a dating profile, while 54% prefer conversations that revolve around mutual interests. The feature aims to capitalise on these trends by enabling students to connect over academic fields, clubs, and campus activities.

Beyond dating, the feature is also positioned as a tool for expanding social circles in college. “University life is about new experiences. With Tinder U, students can connect safely and authentically, whether they’re looking for a study partner, a concert buddy, or something more,” Aditi Shorewal, Communications Lead for Tinder India, said.

The platform has also incorporated safety measures, ensuring that only verified students can join. With online dating becoming an increasingly popular way for young Indians to meet new people, Tinder’s latest initiative is expected to shape some new market trends,
