In the latest episode of Shark Tank India, Rohan Khanduja, founder, Tripole Gears, mentioned how the journey began with a passion for creating high-quality technical rucksacks at competitive prices. Unlike mainstream brands that mass-manufacture generic products, Tripole Gears, according to the founder, identified a gap in the Indian market for specialised outdoor and adventure gear. “There aren’t many players in this space, and our ability to produce superior technical products at competitive costs helps us stand out,” Khanduja said in a conversation with BrandWagon Online. Over time, the company has focused on scaling its manufacturing capabilities to maintain this competitive edge while ensuring affordability for its customers.
Shark Tank India: The turning point
Appearing on Shark Tank India was a defining moment for Tripole Gears, catapulting the brand into the national spotlight. The experience not only allowed the company to share its story with a wider audience but also brought an outpouring of support from customers across the country. “This journey has been a win for my team and my family, who have stood by me every step of the way,” says Khanduja. The exposure has reinforced the brand’s mission to innovate, expand, and deliver high-quality products that resonate with adventure enthusiasts.
During the negotiations, Namita Thapar and Ritesh Agarwal both made offers to invest in Tripole Gears. Kunal Shah, however, took a different approach, stating that he wasn’t interested in ‘playing the small game.’ He made a bold offer of Rs 3 crore for 7.5% equity, valuing the business at Rs 40 crore. While Rohan briefly considered the offer, he asked Kunal if he would lower his equity ask to 4%, a request Kunal firmly declined.
Meanwhile, Ritesh and Namita demonstrated flexibility in their offers. Ultimately, Rohan decided to partner with Ritesh Agarwal, leveraging his deep connections in the travel industry. The final deal was closed at Rs 75 lakh in equity and Rs 25 lakh in debt, valuing the company at Rs 66 crore.
Expansion plans
Tripole Gears has been working with retail stores across the country to build trust with its customers. Recognising the importance of a physical touchpoint in the outdoor gear segment, the brand is planning to open its own retail store soon. “We believe in the value of direct customer interaction, which is why having a physical presence is essential,” Khanduja noted. The company is also open to exploring partnerships with established retail chains to expand its reach, with franchising being a possibility once they gain more experience managing their own retail operations, he added.
The case of sustainability
As sustainability becomes a global trend, Tripole Gears is taking proactive steps to integrate eco-friendly practices into its operations. While recycled fabrics are still more expensive in India, the brand has committed to using PU coatings instead of toxic PVC materials and recycling waste generated during the production process. “Our focus is on reducing waste at the source and designing products with longer lifespans,” explains Khanduja.
