Online orders for pet care products surged 95% year-on-year in FY25, driven by rising pet ownership and growing demand for specialised pet food and grooming items across the country, according to ecommerce enablement platform Unicommerce.

The data, based on transactions processed on the platform, points to strong demand for nutrient-rich food products and hygiene-focused items such as pet broths, chicken sticks, deep-cleaning shampoos, deshedding conditioners, and grooming tools.

While metropolitan and Tier-I cities continued to account for a significant share of the demand, registering a 120% increase in order volumes, the market also saw notable expansion in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, which recorded year-on-year growth of 75% and 60% respectively. Key Tier-II cities included Indore, Surat, and Vadodara, while Tier-III demand was prominent in places such as Udupi, Panjim, and Rupnagar.

The rise in order volumes was accompanied by a shift in consumer behaviour, with prepaid purchases on brand websites growing more than 300% over the previous year. In contrast, cash-on-delivery orders on marketplaces grew by around 200%. The expansion of product offerings—ranging from organic food and dietary supplements to pet clothing and accessories—has contributed to the segment’s growth. Many digital-first pet care brands are also offering subscription-based services, customised products, and veterinary essentials to cater to evolving pet parenting habits.

The trend reflects the changing profile of pet owners, with demand no longer limited to affluent households in metro cities. Increasingly, pet care spending is being driven by younger consumers and middle-income groups in smaller towns.
