Kenvue has introduced a Ready-to-Drink (RTD) version of WHO-approved Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) for diarrhea-related dehydration. The product aims to provide an accurate osmolarity solution for patients, aligning with the World Health Organisation’s standards.
ORSL, the company’s well-known electrolyte drink, has been available in India for over 20 years. However, there have been past concerns that ORSL did not follow the WHO’s recommended ORS formula, despite being marketed as such. This new launch appears to be a response to those criticisms, as Kenvue seeks to align its offering more closely with WHO recommendations.
In the past, Revant Himatsingka, known as ‘The Food Pharmer,’ criticised Indian pharmacies for selling misleading ORS products like ORSL. He claimed these drinks, filled with excessive sugar, were falsely marketed as WHO-approved, potentially worsening dehydration. Paediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh also raised concerns, stressing that high-sugar drinks during diarrhea could harm children. Both highlighted the need for consumers to be cautious about the authenticity of ORS solutions.
According to Kenvue, diarrhea remains a major health issue in India, particularly among children under five. ORS is recognised for preventing up to 93% of deaths from diarrhea. However, studies show that ORS is often under-prescribed, and errors in the preparation of powdered ORS solutions are common. Kenvue’s research indicates that incorrect water measurements and other preparation mistakes may compromise the effectiveness of the product.
With the new RTD ORS, Kenvue aims to provide a solution that ensures proper osmolarity and easier consumption. The company hopes this product will address previous concerns and offer a more reliable rehydration option.
